JOB SUMMARY:
Position is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting research and development projects, primarily emphasizing the use of novel polymeric materials as orthopedic implants and the improvement and implementation of polymer processes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Manages biomaterials projects using both internal and external research and development resources to achieve project objectives.
2. Conducts scientific analysis, design, and invention, concentrating on advancements of existing materials, new applications of existing materials, and identification of new technologies and materials related to orthopedics and other musculoskeletal areas.
3. Develops research plans, design experiments, outlines research procedures to be followed, and identifies and/or provides training to laboratory personnel to carry out research.
4. Participates in decision-making process regarding research priorities of company or department, and provides information on feasibility of prospective projects.
5. Interacts with engineering, manufacturing, marketing, quality control, and regulatory affairs departments on scientific and engineering issues.
6. Collaborates with the various business units within the Biomet organization with regard to product development, biomaterials research, and technical support of strategic planning and business development.
7. Assists in the identification and development of new products and biomaterials from concept to production, focusing on products/materials that address the unmet needs of surgeons and fulfill corporate goals.
8. Plan schedules of research according to company’s timetable, and establish daily or weekly routines necessary to meet project timetable.
9. Justify funding as necessary in support of projects.
10. Conducts research using laboratory equipment, computer resources, and institutional libraries, and other common resources as necessary.
11. Prepares reports and papers of completed projects, and provides updates, as needed, on results of ongoing projects.
12. Performs related duties, as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
• Ability to understand and interpret advanced mathematical concepts as they are applied to material science research. This can include mathematical modeling of mechanical, chemical, and thermodynamic processes for predicting material performance and/or properties, or mathematical analysis of data generated from experiments and processes.
• Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to present technical data to surgeons, sales force groups, and the scientific community.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge and skills identified are typically acquired through an undergraduate or masters degree in Materials Science, Polymers Engineering, chemical engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university, and up to 5 years of polymer processing experience.
WORKING CLIMATE:
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of objects and materials of weight up to 25 pounds.
